Playground of the Mind

January 21, 2016, 18:00 - March 25, 2016, 18:00

From the Press Release:

The new exhibition at GINA Gallery, “The Playground of the Mind,” features works by approximately 50 artists from 30 countries around the world.

The current exhibition focuses on the concept of the “playground” as a multifaceted theme in naïve art. Alongside works depicting physical playgrounds inspired by childhood memories and the artists’ daily lives, the exhibition includes pieces where the “playground” reflects the imagination and inner world of each artist.

We are also delighted to introduce, for the first time, works by artists from Germany and Haiti.

German naïve art began to gain momentum in the first quarter of the 20th century, highlighting daily life in town squares, shops, churches, and rural fishing and farming communities. German naïve artists offer a sharp yet balanced perspective between the innocent naïveté of the painters and the intellectual awareness of rural life (often of the lower middle class), portraying their subjects with precision and patience. German naïve art often aligns with seasonal transitions and showcases highly creative and imaginative works by professional, self-taught painters.

Naïve art in Haiti emerged about a century ago, influenced by West African culture and Vodou, an Afro-Caribbean religion originating in Haiti. The representation of Haiti’s unique and spiritual lifestyle, inspired by these influences, was advanced by Dewitt Peters, a Dutch-American teacher and artist who arrived on the island in 1943. He fell in love with the works of Hector Hyppolite, Castera Bazile, Wilson Bigaud, and others and helped establish the Centre d’Art in Port-au-Prince in 1945. The art of these pioneers depicted the joys of everyday life—both secular and spiritual—and had a significant impact on future generations of Haitian naïve artists. Their works continue to emphasize a natural connection to elements like farms, fields, harvests, and markets.

We invite you to step away from the pressures of the world and the daily grind,
take a deep breath,
and enter the realm of naïve art, brimming with color, tranquility, and serenity.

Come and bring a world of beauty home with you!
