Zoe’s artworks joyfully blend the genres of naivism and modernism, brilliantly using a shimmering palette of colors to highlight – in an idealized realism – our country’s famous urban sites (Tel Aviv’s skyline, Jerusalem’s Old City, Acre’s fortress seawall); its breathtaking landscapes (the Hula Valley; the Galilee below Nazareth; the Valley of the Cross). Sever’s whirling, wind-swept skies are in perpetual motion, perhaps symbolizing a beleaguered country buffeted by endless strife and suggesting the swiftly-passing, ephemeral nature of life. In contrast, the calm and languor surrounding Sever’s oft-present donkeys and sheep suggest the immutability and permanence of the Land and its animals, all of which are likely to survive us and our never-ending conflicts.
