Genevieve Terver-Noel: Reveries

May 19, 2011, 18:00 - July 8, 2011, 18:00

From the Press Release:

Genevieve Terver-Noel is one of the leading naïve artists of France.   She was born in 1934 in Mogador, Morocco, and lived in Marrakech for many years, before moving in 1957 to Metz, France.  Prior to commencing her artistic career in 1975, she served as an elementary school teacher – both in Marrakech and in Metz. Since embarking on her career as a naïve artist, Terver-Noel has had solo exhibitions in Switzerland and France, and her works have been displayed in group exhibitions in France, Israel, Japan, Switzerland and the USA.

Terver-Noel’s distinct, impressionistic style, together with her love for pastoral settings and memorable characters, celebrate a very personal narrative, affording us a window into the soul of France. Her tranquil scenes envelop us with a sense of harmony and splendor; her insightful observations of daily life nurture us with feelings of tenderness and joy. Her works include enchanting landscapes and intimate interiors, reflecting everyday life in the country and among loved ones. A romantic vision echoes throughout her works, portraying a France less known – and less appreciated – by people near and far.

Among her landscapes, Terver-Noel depicts idyllic, outdoor vistas: rustic farms with red roofs and white windows, and children and animals cavorting among the chestnut trees; friends bicycling amidst the fall foliage, beside a herd of sheep and a turquoise stream; olive pickers, using wooden sticks and large nets, near grass so lush that we can smell its freshness; a dreamy house embraced by porch and white fence, and surrounded by magnificent pines and horses – all blended beneath a vast canopy of clouds. She captures the magic of life and nature – utilizing soft brush strokes and minute color changes to create ethereal, yet accessible compositions. As in nature, Terver-Noel’s trees are composed of infinite shades of green, as well as whites, oranges, blues and more. Her unforgettable skies are atmospheric, floating and ever-changing.

Terver-Noel’s interiors invite the viewer to partake in delectable domestic scenes: a man reading by the hearth, surrounded by his cats; a mother preparing her child for the bath, aside a closet overflowing with fresh linens; a tranquil moment in the living room, “adorned” with dog, piano and richly-colored carpet; a captivating concert hall, the stage draped with grand, luxurious red curtains and illuminated with a radiant chandelier; a young woman gazing out of a large window upon a village embraced by the soft shadows of sunset.

Terver-Noel often provides an interplay of indoor and outdoor scenes, offering the observer the opportunity to perceive – and become immersed in – space in a gradual, boundless manner.  Her unique use of perspective enlarges the scene, interiors and landscapes alike, providing multiple viewing angles and wide panoramas to sample and savor.

Terver-Noel captures the natural flow of everyday life as well as its unique rhythms and textures. Her technique often evokes the soothing beauty of a once-heard melody – the dreamlike notes of a piano nocturne; the hypnotic hum of a mother’s lullaby; the distant trill of a soaring bird. Her textures, on the other hand, are eminently tangible – reminding us of the enduring fabric of the meadows, mountains and forests of France.

Genevieve Terver-Noel never ceases to excite our sensibilities. Her expressive colors and special eye for detail fill her canvases with heartfelt love and enchanting innocence. On other occasions, she deliberately forgoes detail, applying a single brushstroke to conjure up the image of a man running across a field. Hers is a world of seasonal cycles and uplifting themes, inspired by a sense of well-being, serenity and “joie de vivre.” Her works afford a charming, idealized and happily naïve view of human nature – embracing life and all of its joys, ambiguities and vicissitudes.

GINA Gallery is therefore proud and honored to host this exceptional exhibition of Genevieve Terver-Noel’s artworks, which are a source of joy for us all. Through her wondrous works, she has enriched our lives and souls and, in the process, has made the naïve world – and our world – a heart’s delight.
