1959 Born in Guatemala
As a child he would go with his parents to the coast to pick coffee. As an adolescent he abandoned teaching for painting.
Learned to paint from his older brother, Mariano Gonzalez Chavajay. While Matias’ style bears resemblances to Mariano’s his paintings seem less serious, partly because his depiction of people is more naןve.
Whether by design or not, Matias sometimes makes mistakes, such as harvesting bananas from a palm tree, that have the effect of imparting charm and a touch of humour to his paintings.
